Abstract [en]

Plastic pollution is one of the most prominent environmental issues in today’s society. The disposal of absorbent hygiene products (AHPs) is a large contributor to this problem. While many single-use plastic products have been exchanged for biodegradable counterparts, the occurrence of this in AHPs is quite low. The aim of this thesis is to examine biobased plastics as replacements for plastic components in disposable hygiene products. Where the biobased plastics are created using a bioblend of proteins as well as different additives. Furthermore, the thesis aims to explore the produced bio-based alternatives by testing created materials, absorption capacity, biodegradability and biostimulation. The results show that bio-based counterparts to plastic components in hygiene products have a lower absorbance capacity but are an attractive alternative in terms of biodegradation and biostimulation.
