Abstract [en]

This study investigates the impact of displaying monetary balances on gambling behavior and risk-taking in online gambling scenarios. Conducted with seven male university students, the research involved a simulated greyhound racing gambling scenario. Participants placed bets in two test versions: one with visible monetary balances and one without. The study found that displaying the balance influenced participants' gambling behaviors. Specifically, participants placed higher odds bets and spread their bets across more dogs when their balance was not visible, indicating increased risk-taking. Conversely, they bet on fewer dogs and played for more races when they could see their balance. Participants were generally unaware of these behavioral changes, highlighting the psychological influence of balance visibility on gambling decisions. The results suggest that the design of feedback mechanisms in gambling interfaces can affect user behavior, with implications for regulatory practices and responsible gambling initiatives.
