Abstract [en]

The contemporary global steel industry is undergoing a significant transformation, shifting from traditional blast furnace-based methods to alternative processes like scrap-based and hydrogen-based steelmaking. This thesis explores the key enablers of hydrogen-based steelmaking, focusing on advancements in electrolysis technology, hydrogen storage, and the provision of renewable electricity. Through a comprehensive literature review, the study examines the technological, economic, and environmental aspects of these advancements. Interviews with technical executives from H2 Green Steel, a leading company in green steel production based in Sweden, provide additional insights into industry practices and challenges. The findings suggest that significant progress in electrolysis efficiency, hydrogen storage solutions, and renewable energy is essential for the widespread adoption of hydrogen-based steelmaking. Ultimately, this research sheds light on the potential for hydrogen to revolutionize the steel industry and identifies critical areas for future development to achieve sustainable steel production.

Den samtida globala stålindustrin genomgår en betydande omvandling, där man övergår från traditionella masugnsbaserade metoder till alternativa processer som skrotbaserad och vätgasbaserad ståltillverkning. Denna kandidatrapport undersöker de viktigaste möjliggörarna för vätgasbaserad ståltillverkning, med fokus på framsteg inom elektrolys teknik, vätgaslagring och tillhandahållandet av förnybar elektricitet. Genom en omfattande litteraturöversikt granskar studien de teknologiska, ekonomiska och miljömässiga aspekterna av dessa framsteg. Intervjuer med tekniska chefer från H2 Green Steel, ett ledande företag inom grön ståltillverkning baserat i Sverige, ger ytterligare insikter i branschens praxis och utmaningar. Resultaten tyder på att betydande framsteg inom elektrolys effektivitet, lösningar för vätgaslagring och för förnybar energi är avgörande för en bred spridning av vätgasbaserad ståltillverkning. Slutligen belyser denna forskning potentialen för vätgas att revolutionera stålindustrin och identifierar kritiska områden för framtida utveckling för att uppnå hållbar ståltillverkning.
