Abstract [en]

Companies in the airline industry are continuously working on improving their turnaround time. An important factor that can improve turnaround time is the airplane boarding process. This report presents a study conducted to assess the influence of (1) carry-on luggage and (2) priority boarding on the efficiency of the boarding process in airline operations. The two factors affecting boarding time were analysed using agent-based simulation within the Unity 3D platform. The research focused on how the presence of carry-on luggage and priority boarding affects five different boarding methods (Back-to-front, Block, Random, WILMA and Steffen). The study aims to evaluate how the five different boarding methods react to the carry-on luggage and priority boarding simulations on the Boeing 777-300ER. The results show that the average boarding time increased with a higher ratio of passengers with carry-on luggage for all boarding methods, with variations in the magnitude of the increase across different strategies, with Steffen and WILMA being affected the least. Additionally, the study found that the impact of priority boarding on the boarding time varied among the different boarding methods, with Back-To-Front having a decrease in boarding time. These findings offer valuable insight for choosing the fastest boarding process depending on the percentage of carry-on luggage and priority boarding.
