Abstract [en]

This thesis explores the viability and aerodynamic impact of integrating a Drag Reduction System (DRS) into the front-wing of a Formula One car. The study addresses the limitations of current DRS implementation, which are restricted to the rear wing, potentially causing aerodynamic imbalances. Utilizing Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) based on Euler’s equations, the research investigates airflow patterns, downforce and drag coefficients of a front-wing. A simplified front-wing model was developed in FreeCAD, meshed using Gmsh, analysed in ParaView and airflow simulations were done in Colab using FEniCS to solve the Euler equations. The results indicate that the CFD simulations were credible, however a complex front-wing was developed for a better understanding of the concept and CFD simulation accuracy. Due to computational power and overall time, the complex front-wing never went through any simulations. Despite the promising findings, the study acknowledges limitations in model fidelity, the assumption of inviscid flow, and the absence of advanced turbulence modelling. These insights provide a foundation for future research to refine the concept and explore practical implementation, potentially revolutionizing the aerodynamic space in motorsport.
