Abstract [en]

This thesis, in collaboration with Scania, presents a comprehensive approach to modeling hydrogen fuel cells using limited data, focusing on dynamic simulations relevant to heavy-duty vehicles. My model, which I implemented in MATLAB and Simulink, simulates a single-stack fuel cell system, providing insights into efficiency, heat and power losses, and hydrogen consumption.

I leveraged basic thermodynamic principles, polarization curves, and mass transport phenomena to develop a simplified yet effective model. Key parameters such as open circuit voltage, activation and charge losses, and mass transport losses are thoroughly examined and incorporated. The model's accuracy is validated against real-world data, demonstrating its potential to deliver reasonable estimates despite the inherent data limitations.

Results indicate that the simplified dynamic model can effectively assist in the early development phases of hydrogen fuel cell systems, guiding optimization efforts for better performance. The study concludes with discussions on error handling, the impact of load cycles, and potential improvements for future work, emphasizing the model's relevance to industry applications.

Denna avhandling, i samarbete med Scania, presenterar en omfattande metod för att modellera vätgasbränsleceller med begränsad data, med fokus på dynamiska simuleringar relevanta för tunga fordon. Min modell, som jag implementerade i MATLAB och Simulink, simulerar ett enkelstack-bränslecellssystem och ger insikter i effektivitet, värme- och effektförluster samt vätgaskonsumtion.

Jag utnyttjade grundläggande termodynamiska principer, polariseringskurvor och massöverföringsfenomen för att utveckla en förenklad men effektiv modell. Nyckelparametrar såsom öppen krets-spänning, aktiverings och laddningsförluster samt koncentrationsförluster undersöks noggrant och inkluderas. Modellens noggrannhet valideras mot verkliga data, vilket visar dess potential att leverera rimliga uppskattningar trots databegränsningar.

Resultaten indikerar att den förenklade dynamiska modellen effektivt kan bidra under de tidiga utvecklingsfaserna av vätgasbränslecellsystem, och vägleda optimeringsinsatser för bättre prestanda. Studien avslutas med diskussioner om felhantering, påverkan av lastcykler och potentiella förbättringar för framtida arbete, med betoning på modellens relevans för industriella tillämpningar.
