Abstract [en]
This study investigates the relationship between Environmental, Social, and Goverance (ESG) scores and portfolio returns. Four portfolios were constructed at different ESG ranges, with no regard to industry or geographical location. The companies in the portfolios were reallocated each year based on changes in their scores. Their returns as well as other metrics were then compared over the time period 2010-2022. For the analysis, the Capital Asset Pricing Model (CAPM), Value at risk (VaR), and Sharpe ratio were primarily used. It was found that the portfolios with lower ESG scores achieved higher returns at a lower risk. With causality not being concluded in this report it highlights the importance of considering factors beyond ESG scores when making investment decisions.
