Abstract [en]
The thesis project ”Reinventing the Beach” proposes the transformation and reuse of the building called the “Vanadis Bath,” designed by architect Paul Hedqvist and built in 1938. Situated in the park Vanadislunden, in Stockholm, Sweden, the building partly operates as a public outdoor bath, open only during the summer months. The use of the rest of the building and its interiors has changed over the years and has been out of use for some time. Today, the building seems to be in decay. The project begins with a research phase to better understand the building’s history, functionality, and architectural qualities. In the subsequent analysis, important questions and strategies are defined to guide decision-making in the design phase of the project. The design phase includes additions that redefine the building´s functionality and its relationship to the surrounding park and city. It also involves a transformation and repurposing of the building that aligns with the existing bath.
