Abstract [en]

In recent years the investment landscape has changed drastically as sustainable investing and Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) criteria have become increasingly important. This is important within all financial sectors, especially in the venture capital (VC) and private equity (PE) landscape. Even though there is anongoing global push towards focusing on ESG within this area, there is a clear gap in the literature. This study aims to address this gap and understand how Swedish VC and PE firms integrate sustainability aspects into their investment strategies, as well as the drivers and challenges of this integration. The research question is defined as How do Swedish venture capital firms integrate ESG considerations into their investment strategies and what drives and challenges this integration? The sub-research questionsare defined as How are the various ESG factors quantified and communicated in reporting processes? and In what ways do the methodologies of ESG integration vary between conventional VC firms and those specializing in impact investments within the venture capital landscape? Initially, a literature review was conducted, followed by a qualitative study in the form of semi-structured interviews. A total of 8 interviews were held with various Nordic VC and PE firms. The interviews were recorded, transcribed, and subsequently coded to develop thematic categories. The results show that all VC firms integrate ESG into their investment strategies due to internal demands, financial incentives, and external pressures, encountering challenges like obtaining reliable data and balancing integration with financial performance. Methodologies differ between conventional VC firms, which prioritize risk mitigation and financial incentives, and Impact VCs, which fully integrate ESG factors to create positive social and environmental impacts. During the discussion, a recommendation of a new tiered framework is presented, which would simplify ESG reporting and make the process easier for investors to compare the early-stage companies.
