The Road to Better Collaboration : An explorative study of the collaboration between Accountants and Data Scientists around Big Data (Swedish)
Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

With the explosion in recent years of the volume of rapidly generated and diverse data known as Big Data, several questions have arisen about how best to manage it. This requires collaboration between stakeholders who understand both the business and the technology behind it. Such actors can for example be accountants and data scientists. The purpose of this exploratory study is therefore to investigate the possibilities of improving the collaboration between accountants and data scientists around Big Data. The research is conducted through a review of previous literature and interviews with accountants and data scientists working in different companies. The results generally indicate that accountants should develop their technical skills and sometimes become more independent. Data scientists may need to develop their financial skills and have the right people around them. In terms of collaboration between accountants and data scientists, it can be beneficial for them to work together on heavier financial projects and for both parties to understand the content and process of the work. Challenges that may arise when collaborating on Big Data are more likely to for example be related to different languages and definitions, time perspectives, and lack of data quality and access. These can be addressed through agile working, skills development days, and clearer data management rules and documentation.
