På uppdrag av James Fisher Defence (JFD) presenterar denna rapport ett examensarbete inom Innovationsledning och Produktutveckling vid Kungliga Tekniska Högskolan i Stockholm. Syftet med projektet var att, genom etablerade produktutvecklingsmetoder, undersöka och föreslå en förbättrad design av sensor masten på undervattensfordonet SEAL Carrier, som tillverkas av JFD på deras fabrik i Vaxholm. Målet var således att identifiera, undersöka och föreslå en design som möjliggör för sensormasten att nå en högre höjd än i dagsläget. 

I projektet ingick att samla kvalitativ data genom åtta (8) intervjuer med anställda av varierande expertområden i syfte att undersöka den kravspecifikation som distribuerades av JFD. Dessutom samlades information om den befintliga sensormasten, som var ett resultat av ett internt produktutvecklingsprojekt 2015. Utöver detta undersöktes lämpliga material och drivmekanismer och en marknadsanalys gjordes i syfte att hitta state-of-the-art lösningar på marknaden. 

Två koncept utvecklades och utvärderades tillsammans med en intern fokusgrupp på JFD. Tillsammans valdes slutligen ett av koncepten för vidareutveckling. Detta innefattade ingående 3D modelleringsarbete i Solid Edge, materialval och tillverkningsteknik, utveckling av prototypen samt presentation av processen som lett fram till slutresultatet för att säkra en tydlig och kvalitativ överlämning. 

Abstract [en]

On behalf of James Fisher Defence (JFD), this report presents a master's thesis in Innovation Management and Product Development at the Royal Institute of Technology in Stockholm. The purpose of this project was to investigate and propose an improved design for the sensor mast on the SEAL Carrier underwater vehicle, manufactured by JFD at their facility in Vaxholm, using established product development methods. The goal was to identify, investigate, and suggest a design that enables the sensor mast to reach a greater height than currently possible.

The project involved collecting qualitative data through eight (8) interviews with employees from various areas of expertise to examine the requirement specification distributed by JFD. Additionally, information was gathered about the existing sensor mast, which resulted from an in-house product development project in 2015. In addition, suitable materials and drive mechanisms were investigated, and a market analysis was conducted to find state-of-the-art solutions on various markets.

Two concepts were developed and evaluated in collaboration with an internal focus group at JFD. One of the concepts was ultimately selected for further development. This included detailed 3D modeling work in SolidEdge, material selection and manufacturing processes, prototype development, and a presentation of the process that led to the final result to ensure a clear and high-quality handover.
