Newly arrived pupils life stories of mathematics. (English)
Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

Mathematics teaching should be planned with regard to the cultural diversity in the class. Many newly arrived students come from different backgrounds with different schooling. This places demands on the teacher to plan a developing teaching that accommodates the students' linguistic and mathematical skills. The purpose of the degree project is to investigate which factors affect newly arrived students' learning in the subject of mathematics, where the students talk about their experiences and what opportunities and difficulties they face. The question investigated in the study was:

• What factors affect the mathematics education of newly arrived or previously newly arrived students in Sweden.

The report is based on a qualitative research method, five semi-structured interviews are obtained. The students' life stories are analyzed thematically by categorizing the stories into different themes, recurring themes from the profiles are combined and analyzed based on the profiles' statements. The results showed that there are various factors that affect the student's learning of mathematics in Sweden, including the student's background, language skills, previous schooling, parents' background, the meeting with the Swedish school, support, motivation and prior knowledge in mathematics.
