Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

Outokumpu Stainless AB is a global manufacturer of stainless steel. At their site Avesta, the hot rolling mill faces issues with a defect causing a telescoped coil. The current method to handle the problem renders defective plate pieces costly and unsafe to handle. In its role as the client, Outokumpu aims to explore the development of a conceptual proposal to reduce the risk of personal injury and make the management of defective plate pieces more effective. This thesis includes the development of a requirement specification and a selection process where the concepts are evaluated based on the requirement specification and other relevant criteria. Following evaluation, the concept with the most advantageous evaluation score will be pursued. The result generated by the work is a concept consisting of shears drivenby a hydraulic cylinder, placed on a five meter long run-out table between the cooling ramps and the coiler, which can cut off the defective part of the strip. The shears are combined with a hydraulic ejection device driven by two cylinders. Next to the run-out table stands a bolster on which the cut-off sheet is ejected. The concept can also be applied to scrap handling on the run-out table during scrap processing in the steckel mill.
