Könsperspektiv på rörlighet. Ett cykelindex för Huddinge (Swedish)
Abstract [en]

In Sweden, the gender gap in cycling is almost closed in terms of how many women cycle compared to men, however, there is a disparity in how women experience cycling in contrast to men. Bikeability Indexes have been tools developed to evaluate and improve the built environment in order to facilitate cycling, but they have fallen into the standardisation of the body and its capabilities to use such infrastructure.

Taking Huddinge as a case of study to evaluate its levels of bikeability and investigate gender differences in the perception and usage of infrastructure, the results showed that overall the municipality needs to improve its infrastructure to make it more friendly towards bikes, but even more, that women perceive the municipality considerably less bikeable than men.

By incorporating women's desires, emotions and needs for a good bike infrastructure through an online survey, and using their answers to weigh 12 indicators, this project demonstrated the need to build, develop and incorporate group-sensitivity bikeability indexes. The findings revealed that factors such as lighting, bicycle parking, and the presence of both small and large greenery, like parks and nature reserves, are crucial in influencing decisions about whether to cycle or not, route selection, and turning cycling into a long-term habit.

The development of a bikeability index with a gender perspective, integrated into the early stages of urban planning, can be a crucial step towards achieving gender equity and promoting sustainable mobility. By ensuring that the unique needs of different groups are considered from the outset, cities can create more inclusive, accessible, and environmentally friendly transportation systems.
