Culture Station - Transformation of a disused train station into a multi-purpose event space

Abstract [en]

Sometimes I feel that we are living in a time lacking a vision for the future in the sense that was common in the 1960s and 70s. In projects by the likes of Archigram, Cedric Price and Kisho Kurokawa there is always a visionary futurism present. The work of that time was probably more concerned with social aspects of architecture and how technology could improve the future while we today have to adapt to pressing environmental issues. Without taking away the importance of sustainability I think we can take inspiration from that visionary way of re-imagining our lived spaces and let architects dream about the future.

This project, Culture Station, is an investigation of how the disused train station at Karlberg can be transformed into a multi-purpose event space. This is achieved by building a raised platform on top of the platform, using existing foundation and infrastructure to transport material and people. Creating a new space for culture while keeping the possibility of opening the station.

My thesis is that visionary ideas of architecture and metropolitan life could be explored through existing forms of infrastructure used in a new way. Futurism doesn’t have to be unreachable but instead we could work more with possible ways of rethinking current use of technology and ways of communication.
