Naturum Stora Vika is an alternative nature center located at a former limestone quarry in Stora Vika, south of Stockholm. The quarry and cement factory, operational since 1949, supplied concrete during Stockholm's mid-1900s urbanization. In response to industrialization, the Swedish Environmental Protection Agency was established in 1967, creating the naturum brand in 1972. Naturum centers, described as "portals to nature," showcase local flora and fauna, typically in nature reserves or national parks. They aim to provide city dwellers with an immersive nature experience, highlighting a divide between protected natural areas and those open to exploitation.
Naturum Stora Vika seeks to bridge this gap by exploring the relationship between humans and nature through innovative architectural spaces and processes. It challenges the separation between culture and nature, offering a place where visitors can engage deeply with the natural environment, fostering a closer connection and greater understanding of the impact of human activities in relation to nature.
