The task was to create a hybrid and public building in the municipality of Nynäshamn. “Eden’s Folk High School”, which is my proposal, is located right next to Ösmo church in the more rural area of the town Ösmo. Ösmo’s typology consists mainly of residential houses, and the development is predominantly on the western side of the railroad track, which links Ösmo to both Stockholm and Nynäshamn. Since few of the residents feel any reason to be on the other side of the track, I propose a folk high school partly to invite more people to visit the church and the beautiful cultural landscapes around it. The school would serve as a gathering place for the local population as well as a place for education and preservation of plants. The ambition is that the folk high school’s education, in addition to general courses, should focus on preserving different types of plants and their genetic characteristics by cultivating them. By preserving the genetic diversity within a plant species, a greater variety of traits is also preserved, which can enable better resilience, for example, in the event of climate change. This type of building is also well-suited to the area since the environment near the site has historically been characterized by cultivation and agriculture.

The building includes the facilities of the folk high school, which among other things, include student housing and classrooms. In addition, there is a restaurant, a library, and a larger hall for various types of events, and these spaces should be accessible to the public. In order to make use of the fruits and berries produced by the plants being cultivated, there is also a small “musteri”, which is a place where, mainly, fruit is processed and turned into beverages, as part of the folk high school. In a quieter part of the building, there is also a columbarium, which is a place to keep urns. Since the church was located right next to the project site and the area has been influenced by the presence of the church, I did not want them to be completely separate; rather, the intention was to create a relationship between my project and the existing church to strengthen the presence of both on the site.

Uppgiften var att skapa en hybrid och offentlig byggnad i Nynäshamns kommun. Edens Folkhögskola, vilket är mitt förslag, ligger alldeles intill Ösmo kyrka i tätorten Ösmo som är en av stationerna på pendeltågsresan mellan Stockholm och Nynäshamn. Ösmos typologi består främst av bostadshus och bebyggelsen ligger till övervägande del på den västra sidan järnvägen och få av invånarna upplevde att de hade anledning att vara på den Östra sidan. För att locka fler till att besöka kyrkan och de fina kulturlandskap som finns runt omkring föreslår jag en folkhögskola, som ska fungera som en samlingsplats för lokalbefolkningen, men även en plats för utbildning och bevarande av växter. Ambitionen är att folkhögskolans utbildning, utöver allmänna kurser, ska ha ett fokus på att bevara olika sorters växter och dess genetiska egenskaper genom att odla växterna. Genom att bevara den genetiska mångfalden inom en växtsort så bevaras också en större variation egenskaper, vilket kan möjliggöra en bättre resiliens vid exempelvis klimatförändringar. Denna typ av byggnad passar då bra i området eftersom miljön intill platsen historiskt har präglats av odling och jordbruk.

I byggnaden ingår folkhögskolans lokaler som bland annat innefattar studentrum och lektionssalar. Utöver dessa finns det en restaurang, ett bibliotek och en större sal för olika typer av evenemang och dessa ytor ska vara tillgängliga för allmänheten. För att ta vara på de frukter och bär som produceras av de växter som odlas finns också ett mindre musteri som en del av folkhögskolan. I en mer stilla del av byggnaden finns också ett kolumbarium, dvs förvaring av urnor. Då kyrkan låg alldeles intill projektplatsen och platsen präglats av kyrkans närvaro ville jag inte att de skulle vara helt åtskilda, avsikten var snarare att skapa en relation mellan mitt projekt och den befintliga kyrkan för att stärka bådas närvaro på platsen.
