Abstract [en]

This thesis explores the optimization of transient response in port injected hydrogen fuelled spark ignition (SI) engines for heavy-duty trucks, focusing on a modified Scania CBE1 13L port-injected hydrogen engine. The study addresses the challenge of poor transient response due to hydrogen’s low density and pre-ignition tendencies, which limit the engine’s performance under load changes and during acceleration. Theoretical background covers the importance of transient operations and how different forced induction methods can enhance this response. The methodology involves simulating various boosting techniques—including air injection, e-Turbo, superchargers, and e-Boosters—using GT-Suite software. Each boosting system was tested to evaluate its impact on engine torque, turbocharger speed, and air-fuel mixture. Results show that air injection is the most cost effective and provided the best improvement in transient response for 1.7 lambda, increasing power delivery and reducing lag. e-Turbo and e-Booster systems also showed potential but required more complex controls, but e-Booster gives the best results for 2.1 lambda. Supercharging improved low-end performance but introduced mechanical losses. In conclusion, bringing hydrogen engine performance closer to diesel standards can be possible by using different boosting solutions, contributing to sustainable transportation solutions.

Denna avhandling undersöker optimeringen av transientsvaret i portinsprutade vätgasdrivna gnisttändningsmotorer (SI) för tunga lastbilar, med fokus på en modifierad Scania CBE1 13L portinsprutad vätgasmotor. Studien tar upp utmaningen med dålig transientrespons på grund av vätgasens låga densitet och tendenser till förtändning, vilket begränsar motorns prestanda vid belastningsändringar och under acceleration. Den teoretiska bakgrunden omfattar vikten av transient drift och hur olika metoder för forcerad induktion kan förbättra denna respons. Metoden innebär simulering av olika boostertekniker - inklusive luftinsprutning, e-turbo, kompressorer och e-boosters - med hjälp av programvaran GT-Suite. Varje boostersystem testades för att utvärdera dess inverkan på motorns vridmoment, turboladdarens varvtal och luft-bränsleblandningen. Resultaten visar att luftinsprutning är det mest kostnadseffektiva och gav den bästa förbättringen av transientresponsen för 1,7 lambda, vilket ökade effektuttaget och minskade fördröjningen. e-turbo- och eboostersystemen visade också potential men krävde mer komplexa kontroller, men ebooster ger bäst resultat för 2,1 lambda. Kompressorladdning förbättrade prestandan vid låga varvtal men medförde mekaniska förluster. Sammanfattningsvis är det möjligt att föra vätgasmotorernas prestanda närmare dieselprestandan genom att använda olika boostersystem, vilket bidrar till hållbara transportlösningar.
