Abstract [en]

This thesis explores the integration of sustainable fuels into the propulsion systems of diesel-based naval corvettes, focusing on alternative fuels that can be implemented by 2050. The global push towards reducing greenhouse gas emissions, especially within the maritime sector, necessitates innovative approaches to fuel usage in military vessels. Through a comprehensive literature review and multi-criteria analysis, this research evaluates the feasibility, technological readiness, and environmental impact of various biofuels and synthetic fuels. The findings suggest that biofuels, due to their higher technological maturity and immediate applicability, are more suitable for near-term integration, while synthetic fuels present a promising long-term solution as their production capabilities and technological maturity improve. This study contributes to the ongoing efforts to achieve net-zero emissions in military maritime operations, offering insights into future fuel strategies for naval vessels.
