Abstract [en]

The use of active magnetic bearing for vibration-dampening in vertical axis hydropower units could improve longevity and increase time between maintenance. Vibrations in rotational machinery causes wear on structure and energy losses in the form of heat and noise. A magnetic bearing might be able to counteract the vibrations, increase the stiffness of the generator shaft and provide some damping to the whole system. For this thesis a prototype active magnetic bearing was designed. The core shape was optimized for maximum magnetic force within a limited space and the magnetic bearing was installed on a small scale vertical generator test-rig. Preliminary testing suggests promising capacity in terms of responsiveness and resulting magnetic force. The intent is to provide a platform for future testing of stiffness and dampening from magnetic bearings.

Användnignen av aktiva magnetlager för vibrationsdämpning i vertikal-axlade vattenkraftgeneratorer har potential att förlänga livslängd och tid mellan underhåll. Vibrationer i roterande maskiner orsakar slitage på infästning och energiförluster i form av värme och ljud. Ett magnetisk lager kan möjligen motverka vibrationer, öka styvheten i generatoraxeln och tillföra dämpning till systemet. I denna uppsats beskrivs metoden bakom konstruktionen av ett aktivt magnetlager. Formen på kärnan optimerades mot maximal magnetisk kraft inom ett begärnsat uttrymme och prototypen installerades på en vertikalaxlad generatortestrig i mindre skala. Initiala tester påvisar lovande resultat i termer av svarstid och resulterande magnetisk kraft. Avsikten med prototypen är att konstruera en platform för vidare forskning på ämnet av vibrationsdämpning genom magnetiska lager.
