This diploma work has centred around a wooden boat association in Valdemarsvik. The result has been the creation of a clubhouse/workshop-building and a multi-use warehouse for winter storage of boats. I have aimed at creating architecture that speaks to the cultural values of the association and town identity connected to current and historical Valdemarsvik. To achieve this, I first had to create a profile of what Valdemarsvik is. By delving into history and study the development of the town during the 1900s I could build a picture of what has persisted, and what have been lost and gained during the years. This combined with visits to Waldemarsvik wooden boat association (WTF), and 10 years of personal experience acted as a foundation for my ideas through the project. This profile became something to come back to when making decisions during the project. Throughout the semester the image of what needed to be considered grew somewhat. What started as a Workshop building for the association, needed to become more public. While occupying a public space in the heart of town one cannot have a solely private program. This addition to the harbor therefore aims to serve more than just WTF.Hence the creation of two buildings. One a base of operations of sorts, a core for the association, and another to be used for different purposes as needs change throughout the year. They mimic the program of previous buildings on the site and stive to give some life to a place that has endured some neglect during recent years. These new additions aesthetically relate to historical harbour buildings but are also inspired by modern building techniques. The core motivation behind material choices and detailing however, comes from the association and their boats. To merge these was one of the challenges of the project. The result of which follows in the coming pages.
