Abstract [en]

The KTH Formula Student car has an autonomous driving system which is dependent ondifferent sensor modules to track change in position. The present sensor modules do notaccount for the body slip angle of the vehicle which is the angle between the latitudinal andlongitudinal velocity of the car. This angle is significant when the wheels slip at high torqueand during cornering. This thesis will revolve around creating a body slip angle sensor to improve the FormulaStudent vehicle's odometry calculations. Different implementations were investigated and anoptical sensor module was the chosen approach. The hardware choice was not optimal andthe focus of the project was instead placed on the software meaning building a templatematching method. The result was a proof of concept algorithm which yielded accuratetranslation estimations given some limiting factors. This thesis also covers different futurefollow-up projects on how to achieve a complete and functional body slip angle sensor.
