Standardization within BIM : A Future-Oriented Analysis (English)
Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

The digitization in construction engineering and architecture has led to an increased utilization of Building Information Modeling (BIM) to enhance efficiency and collaboration in construction projects. Despite these advancements, the industry still faces challenges, particularly concerning the interoperability and standardization of BIM. This lack of standardized interoperability can constrain BIM's full potential and create barriers to smooth collaboration. This thesis aims to analyze the challenges and opportunities within BIM interoperability and standardization. Specifically, the focus will be on how industry standards can facilitate collaboration and information exchange among various stakeholders within the construction sector. The methods employed in this study include literature reviews, document analyses, and case studies. The findings reveal that despite existing standards, achieving full interoperability between different BIM tools remains a challenge, with discrepancies hindering effective information exchange. Standardization facilitates collaboration by establishing a uniform work environment, saving time, and reducing costs. Furthermore, standardization fosters innovation within BIM through collaboration and knowledge exchange. Improved interfaces and advanced methods for data management are potential areas for innovation. In conclusion, standardization is pivotal in addressing challenges, streamlining processes, and promoting innovation within BIM and construction engineering.
