Abstract [en]

How can a pre-existing building that has undergone transformation and decay be translated into an accurate representation that can work for the development of an architectural project?

The decaying Maison Orpierre is an uncut gem that has potential to be utilized as an attractive hospitality building. The in large parts 17-century building with its many layers of historic fabric have undergone a seemingly organic transformation throughout the centuries, where the oldest parts stem from the 12- century. The building has undergone both changes in program, its three dimensional property ownership as well as raging decay. This has rendered the building into a geometrical complexity of irregularities, which makes it a challenge to visually understand, and even more so to represent as a boundary condition in an architectural design process.

I want to make a case study of  the pre-existing project with its many kinks and challenges in architectural representation in order to explore contemporary technical possibilities as tools for understanding and representing an architectural idea, both as a hands on designer in the process, and for an outside observer.

The case study design will aim at creating sustainable preservation of the building as part of a cultural heritage. In order to make a project like this feasible, ecological as well as economical aspects need to work in a delicate balance, where transformation and preservation and storytelling should work in tandem in order to create attraction.
