Abstract [en]
My thesis project, "Development of Cairo Garbage City," investigates the transformation of Manshiet Nasser, an informal settlement known for its garbage system. The research identifies four primary layers within the community: open structures for garbage storage, high-density housing blocks, wood-structured pigeon towers, and rooftop pig houses. My project explores how these structures can evolve over 5, 10, and 20 years.
The proposed development plan envisions a phased approach to enhance living conditions and infrastructure. In the short term (5 years), informal structures could be adapted with balconies for efficient garbage movement. High-density housing blocks will incorporate public spaces on the ground floor, while pigeon towers and pig houses will begin integrating more stable wooden structures and vegetation, respectively. Over 10 years, the transformation includes converting lower levels of pigeon towers into housing blocks, and further developing pig houses into vertical farms. By the 20-year mark, the area is anticipated to become a model of sustainable urban living, featuring comprehensive vertical farms, expanded housing, and reduced reliance on garbage-related activities.
My main project serves as a blueprint for this transformation, illustrating how integrating these four layers can turn Garbage City into a thriving, eco-friendly urban area with increased housing and innovative agricultural practices.
