Abstract [en]

This ethnographic study explores how Swedish adolescents engage with audiobooks, addressing the decline in reading motivation amid the rise of digital media. Participants regarded audiobooks as a distinct experience from print reading, often utilizing them during commutes but facing challenges in creating immersive listening environments in public spaces. Many preferred switching between reading and listening based on context, highlighting the need for platforms that track progress across formats. Current recommendation algorithms fell short for new users, who sought familiar titles rather than app-generated suggestions. Additionally, existing subscription models did not align with adolescents’ usage patterns, with some expressing a desire for more flexible, library-like options. This research underscores the potential for audiobook platforms to enhance engagement by offering personalized, socially connected, and adaptable design solutions, ultimately fostering a renewed interest in reading among young people.

Denna etnografiska studie utforskar hur svenska ungdomar engagerar sig i ljudböcker och adresserar den minskande läsmotivation som följer med den ökande digitala mediekonsumtionen. Deltagarna betraktade ljudböcker som en distinkt upplevelse jämfört med tryckt läsning. Ljudböcker användes ofta under pendling, men stötte på utmaningar med att skapa en uppslukande lyssningsmiljö i offentliga rum. Många föredrog att växla mellan att läsa och lyssna beroende på sammanhang, vilket belyser behovet av plattformar som kan följa läsframsteg över olika format. Nuvarande rekommendationsalgoritmer uppfyllde inte behoven hos nya användare, som sökte efter bekanta titlar snarare än app-genererade förslag. Dessutom stämde befintliga prenumerationsmodeller inte överens med ungdomars användningsmönster, där vissa uttryckte en önskan om mer flexibla, biblioteksliknande alternativ. Denna forskning understryker potentialen för ljudboksplattformar att öka engagemanget genom att erbjuda personligt anpassade, socialt kopplade och anpassningsbara designlösningar, vilket i slutändan kan främja ett förnyat intresse för läsning bland unga människor.
