Statistical QoS Requirements, Timeslot Capacity and Dimensioning for Interactive Data Services in GERAN - The GSM/EDGE Radio Access Network

Abstract [en]

It is expected that many operators of 3rd generation systems will wish to offer some form of statistical Quality of Service guarantees to users of interactive data services. This paper investigates the cost in radio resources for providing such statistical guarantees for the GSM/EDGE Radio Access Network. It is seen that the cost, inversely measured as timeslot capacity, varies significantly with a few parameters, whereas it is rather constant with others. Frequency reuse, path-loss, link performance as well as the statistical quality requirement itself have a rather direct cost impact. Shadowing, interference averaging, packet sizes and resource availability on the other hand affect the cost to a smaller extent. Based on these observations of timeslot capacity, simple dimensioning rules may be outlined.
