Abstract [en]

The notched shear test (NST) has been used to measure shear strength profiles in the thickness direction of fluting, liner, sack and paperboard. Different shear strength profiles could be measured for the different paper qualities; in paperboard the profile followed the ply structure, in other qualities profiles with extreme points in the middle or close to the outer surfaces could be measured. A test procedure based on ground grooves was also suggested for characterization of shear strength in thin paper qualities. With this procedure the shear strength for newsprint and copy paper was approximated.
