Magneto-optical and magnetoresistive properties of CoFe-MgO nanocomposite films

Abstract [en]

Nanocomposite CoFe-MgO films, where magnetic CoFe grains are embedded into an insulating MgO matrix, show a pronounced correlation between the tunneling magnetoresistance (TMR) and the magnetorefractive effect properties. The effect is due to the contribution of the spin-dependent conductivity to the optical conductivity of the films. Furthermore, an enhanced magneto-optical Kerr rotation is observed and explained as due to the changes in the band structures at the surface of the magnetic grains and the respective changes in the off-diagonal optical conductivity. The observed effects may prove useful for noncontact characterization of TMR materials.
