Abstract [en]

Wave energy is considered to be a promising renewable energy source that can contribute greatly for global energy supply, especially in electricity generation sector. AtUppsalaUniversity, a wave energy conversion system applying a linear synchronous generator directly driven by a point absorbing buoy is developed. Different researches are carried out to optimize the system since 2002. Hydrodynamic research on the wave – device interaction relates to efficiency of energy absorption, hence is always a vital subject.

This master thesis acts as a start for my following doctoral degree study, which aims to simulate hydrodynamic models in wave energy absorption system by electrical equivalence. The work can lead to a possibility of expressing the whole wave power generation system by one electric circuit, enabling the design and adjustment of the system more convenient and efficient.

The thesis starts from a background study on ocean wave energy,UppsalaUniversitywave power system, conventional hydrodynamic modelling methods, and potential linear wave theory. As one of the main parts, the thesis analyzes three cases with the same modelling concept. Been inspired by the case studies, a modelling method which can be used in wave energy system is suggested, including the procedures. Advantages and potential drawbacks of this modelling concept are also analyzed. In a sense, the thesis has built a general framework for the entire research on modelling hydrodynamic parameters by electrical equivalence, only with absence of specific models, which will be done later in the PhD. study period.
