This research paper evaluates the business potential of an upcoming innovative solution from Ericsson and its partner, Swedish Institute of Computer Science (SICS), in the Consider8 Project. This solution is aimed at providing the human mobility pattern analyses of specific geographic areas through mobile phone Network data to its potential clients. The Consider8 Project Partners are interested in positioning this upcoming product primarily for the Transportation Planning & Analysis Segment. Since the idea was novel, its business potential was unknown. Furthermore, every potential end-customer of the solution might perceive its benefits differently based upon their different priorities, constraints, needs and etc. Therefore, this research aims at evaluating the business potential of this innovative product idea through real-world cases to attain a realistic estimation.
This qualitative research is based upon the case study research type. The research follows the inductive approach because the product’s business potential and customer perception in the transportation planning & analysis segment was entirely unknown. Through the selection criteria, three cases were selected i.e. Sweden (Country), State of New York (State) and Greater London (County). Data was primarily gathered from 14 individuals in total representing main potential clients from all the selected cases through semi-structured interviews and questionnaires. Business Potential was evaluated using the most relevant tools from the opportunity evaluation process i.e. Idea Kernel, Customer evaluation, Market Size and Business Model. The research outcomes conclude good business potential of the solution in the cases and points toward similar possibilities in other highly developed nations as well. Furthermore, a trend of increasing development of competing products was also observed.
The research provides deep potential end-customer insight on the selected cases and suggests suitable business models to exploit the opportunity. In essence, this research demonstrates the practical use of opportunity evaluation & development tools for innovative businesses.
