The method involves detecting temporal progression of an engine operating parameter and differentiating the progression during a time slot. Temporal progression of temperature is detected during another time slot and a determination is made if the progression of the temperature has a temperature peak. Moment of occurrence of the temperature peak is assigned to moment of occurrence of the progression of the parameter and to one cylinder. Independent claims are also included for the following: (1) a device for detecting a reactive gas portion in an exhaust gas of an internal combustion engine (2) a device for measuring rotation and position of a rotating component such as a shaft (3) a method for measuring rotation and position of a rotating component.
