Research approaches on educational technology

Abstract [en]

This study examines articles published in Computers & Education, Educational Media International, Journal of Educational Computing Research, and Journal of Educational Media between 2000 and 2004. The following research questions guided the paper: What characterizes research on educational technologies in an international context? How has research on educational technologies developed recently? What characterizes research in each of the four journals? The findings of the study depict a pluralistic research tradition. The majority of published papers are empirical (68%), representing quantitative surveys and field experiments, as well as qualitative studies, collecting data through interviews and observational techniques. Four trends were discerned: (1) an increase in the number of empirical articles; (2) a decrease of the ratio of explicitly described methods during 2004; (3) a possible decrease of quantitative approaches and; (4) a decrease of opinion papers during 2003 and 2004. The study suggests reflection on publishing policies since they contribute to shaping the field. Moreover, researchers are challenged to reflect on the state of the field and how it may be further developed
