Examination of eddy current influence on the behavior of a giant magnetostrictive functional unit

Current simulation models for the magnetoelastic behavior of giant magnetostrictive materials have been successfully used in designing low #x2010;frequency functional units based on magnetostrictive effects. At higher frequencies, however, the precision of these models decreases due to eddy currents inside the material. In a specially designed setup, a functional unit was electrically feeded with sinusoidal currents of different amplitudes and frequencies and mechanically loaded with different mechanical forces. The experimental data obtained were used in an extended simulation model able to include eddy current effects into the magnetomechanical process. The extended model has been verified experimentally for sinusoidal magnetizations at different frequencies and mechanical loads. A comparison between this experimentally extended model and a corresponding analytically extended model is also done. The comparison gives an indication of the interaction between mechanical stresses and magnetic field penetration inside the magnetostrictive material.
