Evaluation of a magnetostrictive drive element model

A voltage #x2010;fed magnetostrictive drive element is modeled. The model involves the Terfenol rod, a magnetizing coil, permanent magnets, a magnetic circuit, and predicts displacements and stresses under different load conditions. In this model the performance of the drive element is calculated using a finite difference method for the active material, Faraday #x2019;s and Ampere #x2019;s laws for the electric circuit, and a finite #x2010;element method for the magnetic circuit comprising permanent magnets. The resulting system of equations is solved using a dynamic simulation program. A comparison between the results of the model and experimental data from a commercial drive element is presented.
