Abstract [en]

This paper presents an experimental and theoretical investigation of the charge distribution, possibilities to reduce the total amount of refrigerant, the void fraction, and pressure drop in a heat pump system and its components. The research is a part of a project that has as a goal the development of an efficient domestic heat pump system that would cover a big part of the energy needs (about 5 kW) of an average single-family house, while safety is carefully considered by keeping the refrigerant charge under 150 grams.

 

For this purpose, a test unit was built and propane was chosen as the working fluid. Rectangular Copper Micro Channel (RCMC) heat exchangers with smaller internal volume were used. A theoretical model of the charge distribution in the heat exchangers was developed and theoretical results were compared to the experimental values.
