Abstract [en]

Purifying seepage water from a disposal site comprises passing the water through a series of treatment steps in the following sequence - sedimentation, chemichal precipitation, sorption and retention. Also claimed is the apparatus for the above which comprises a chemical precipitation apparatus, and a combined sorption and retention apparatus, comprising a compact wet soil system. USE - The method allows metals and nutrients to be removed from different types of contaminated water. ADVANTAGE - The relatively low amount of electricity needed to power the process equipment and the reduced amount of chemicals that need to be added make the process relatively cost effective, while the purification process is readily adaptable according to local needs.
