Ultra-coherent signal output from an incoherent cw-pumped singly resonant optical parametric oscillator

Incoherent broad-bandwidth cw-pumped singly resonant optical parametric oscillator (OPO), in the quasi-phase-matched non-degenerate configuration, may efficiently generate ultra-coherent signal output by the convection-induced phase-locking mechanism in which the incoherence of the pump is absorbed by the idler wave allowing the signal to become highly coherent. In actual nonlinear quadratic waveguide configurations one obtains signal spectral widths smaller than 5 x 10(-4) times the pump spectral width, and a reduction of the average signal intensity fluctuations by less than a factor 10(-4).
