Abstract [en]

In 2006 Mario Bellini won the architectural competition for the refurbishment of the iconic Deutsche Bank twin towers in Frankfurt. Within the extensive environmentally-conscious renovation Bellini identified nine key areas to be modernized. In the lobby he proposed a strong visual focus point: A sphere, made from seemingly random criss-crossing metal strips, represents a fluid and dynamic core of the building. Bellini’s vision closely matched the client’s goals. Thus the image of the sphere was further developed by an interdisciplinary team of the architect (Mario Bellini Associati S.r.l), the engineers (Bollinger + Grohmann), and the contractor (Arnold AG). The process from the image to the real object is described in this chapter.
