Abstract [en]

Investigating solar flare induced perturbations on narrowband VLF transmissions is a way of performing research on the ionospheric D region without having to use in situ measurements which are limited in that part of the Earth’s atmosphere.

A detection algorithm for solar flare induced perturbations on VLF signals was created with the purpose of obtaining the minimum detectable C class flare on these signals. The algorithm was applied to 2009–2010 data on five different transmission paths finding the minimum detectable flare to be C 1.4. Performing research on these five transmission paths also enabled analysis on which factors lead to the detectable flare perturbations in the VLF transmissions. The conclusion from this research is that it is not only the size of the solar flare that contributes to whether it is detectable on the VLF transmissions or not. The state of the local ionosphere during the perturbation is equally important. It showed that the noise level of the transmission paths is a dominant factor.
