Abstract [en]

This Master's Thesis gives a brief introduction to the Wireless Application Protocol: the motivation for using WAP, the WAP model, the architecture and protocols, some services, and WAP solution benefits. The project focuses then on security in WAP, in particular it discusses the different solutions of WAP security: WTLS, WIM, WPKI, WMLScrypto library, and WPP (for providing End-to-End security).

A short chapter is dedicated to the WAP Gateway/Proxy 1.0, to understand its architecture, use and functionality in WAP.</p> Security services and functionality offered by WAP, for secure e-commerce and remote access, are studied: encryption, user and host authentication, packet integrity protection, Network Access Translator, and non-repudiation of origin.

Finally the security in WAP is compared to TLS and IPSec, which are two different existing solutions. In the part called 'Future work' there is a description of some problems that WAP has and possible extensions that can be made.

In the appendix, a possible service offered by WAP is shown. A WAP client accesses the Ericsson Corporate Network by a router that permits it to connect to a WAP Gateway, to fetch WML pages and to send commands to an Ericsson e-box. This permits the user to turn on and off an item of electric home equipment (for example switch on and off a lamp).

In questa tesi viene fatta una breve introduzione su WAP (Wireless Application Protocol) descrivandone le motivazioni del suo utilizzo, il modello, l'architettura e i protocolli, i servizi e i benefici offerti da WAP. Viene poi approfondita la sicurezza in WAP, in particolare sono descritte e discusse le diverse soluzioni offerte: WTLS (Wireless Transport Layer Security), WIM (WAP Identity Module), WPKI (WAP Public Key Infrastructure), la libreria WMLScrypto (Wireless Markup Language Scrypto), e WPP (Wireless Port Proxy).

Un capitolo è dedicato al WAP Gateway/Proxy 1.0, ne viene mostrata la sua architettura, l'uso e le funzionalità in WAP.

WAP offre alcuni servizi di sicurezza per il commercio elettronico e l'accesso remoto, qui sono studiati in particolare: la criptografia, l'autenticazione, la protezione d'integritàdei messaggi trasmessi, NAT (Network Access Translator) e la non-repudiation d'origine.

In fine la sicurezza di WAP viene confrontata con la sicurezza offerta da altri due tipi di soluzioni, già esistenti e in uso oggi: TLS (Transport Layer Security) e IPSec (Internet Protocol Security). Nella sezione `Future work´ vengono trattati alcuni problemi e possibili estensioni di WAP.

Nella `appendix´ è descritto un possibile servizio che può essere offerto usando WAP. Un WAP client può accedere alla rete Ericsson Corporate Network attraverso un router che gli permette di connettersi al WAP Gateway, caricare così pagine WML e mandare comandi alla Ericsson e-box. Questo permette all'utente di accendere e spegnere uno strumento elettrico che in questo caso è una lampada collegata alla e-box.
