Abstract [en]

This paper discusses two different ways of achieving network security, IPSec as an end-to-end security service and firewalls as perimeter based security system. First an overview is made of the different security threats and their inter-relationships. Then the different security services as countermeasures to the different threats are discussed.

A thorough investigation is then performed of the two security mechanisms IPSec and firewall technology regarding security services, functionality, and design.

A comparison of the security services and functionality of IPSec and firewall is made.

Finally, this paper concludes what impact IPSec as an end-to-end security service will have on the future role of firewalls.
