Reconfigurable Antenna Element for MIMO Applications

Abstract [en]

MIMO systems introduce diversity at the mobile stationallowing highly reliable communications compared to a corresponding SISOsystems. One possibility to obtain diversity is to displace the antennaelements. This would give space diversity, meaning that the difference in pathsfor the two antennas is used. Different polarizations at the antenna elementsis another way of obtaining diversity. By having the possibility to change thereceiving polarization, the risk of losing information because of the incomingsignal having a certain polarization is reduced. A polarization reconfigurablePIFA with RF-MEMS switches is proposed as a mobile terminal antenna element forMIMO systems. Two different polarizations are achieved through the symmetricaldesign that incorporates RF-MEMS switches. Measurements and simulations arepresented along with calculations on the correlation between the twoconfigurations.
