Abstract [en]

This Master’s Thesis work was performed at the Studio Engineer department at Volvo Cars

Design Centre in Gothenburg, Sweden. The assignment has been to create a new idea of an air

vent where the news value mainly was focused at functionality but also with great attention on

visual appearance.

The work has been totally independent and not been aimed to any specific car model. The

independency initially made that the visual appearance primary wasn’t limited in any way due

to surrounding components. The independency made that the way of working followed a

general design development process.

The developing process has been done in different stages with following selection rounds.

Primarily a lot of information about demands and limitations was collected concurrently with

performing a world wide analysis of existing solutions. From the initial creation of a lot of

possible proposals for solutions, at the end via a number of iteration rounds, two prototypes

have been produced and evaluated regarding function and appearance.

Detta examensarbete har utförts på Studioingenjörsavdelningen vid Volvo Personvagnar ABs

Designcenter i Göteborg. Uppdraget har varit att ta fram ett förslag på nytt air vent (på

svenska, luftutblås) där nyhetsvärdet främst var fokuserat på funktion men även med stor vikt

på utseende.

Arbetet har varit helt fristående och har inte varit inriktat mot någon specifik bilmodell vilket

initialt gjorde att främst utseendet inte begränsades i något avseende på grund av omgivande

komponenter. Att arbetet inte var kopplat till någon specifik bilmodell gjorde att arbetssättet

följde en generell produktutvecklingsprocess.

Utvecklingsprocessen har skett i olika faser med påföljande urvalsomgångar. Inledningsvis

samlades information om krav och begränsningar in samtidigt som en omvärldsanalys

genomfördes. Från att initialt tagit fram en mängd förslag på lösningar har antalet, via flera

iterationsrundor, reducerats och till slut resulterat i två fysiska prototypframtagna modeller

som kunnat utvärderas med avseende på funktion och estetik.
