An innovative solution to CNG & LNG filling of heavy-duty vehicles.

Abstract [en]

The present master’s thesis is devoted to the development of an innovative technical and technological solution for creating an efficient CNG and LNG supply system primarily for heavy-duty motor vehicles taking long distance inter-city and international routes by retrofitting a part of automobile gas refueling compressor stations (CNG filling stations) of current and developed gas supply systems by additional LNG production, storage and distribution units. 

The thesis consists of the introduction, four chapters and conclusion. The first chapter provides the analysis of the current condition of gasification and gas supplies to vehicles in the world and in Russia and outlines the objectives of the study, developments and implementation. The second chapter looks at various technical and technological solutions for automobile gas fuel systems and proposes a new gas fuel system for LNG and CNG-powered heavy-duty vehicles taking long-distance inter-city and international routes. The third chapter is devoted to the development of a new more efficient gas supply system for motor vehicles based on rational spacing of LNG and CNG refueling stations, part of which is equipped with units for LNG production from network natural gas and the other part works on import LNG and can fill vehicles with LNG and CNG regasified from it. It shows design and development plans of proposed automobile gas refueling stations and estimates the efficiency of application of developed technologies and systems. The fourth chapter is an overview of Swedish case of natural gas utilization as motor fuel. It discusses current implementation of CNG, LNG and LCNG technologies for road transportation around the country (with regard to existing infrastructure and dual-fuel heavy-duty vehicles running on natural gas) and possibility of implementation of the developed innovative technological solution in Sweden to create more efficient natural gas supply system. 

The conclusion outlines ways and prospects of suggested developments at highways of Russia, Sweden and Western Europe (Blue Corridors, Gas Highway, Golden Ring projects).
