Development of Modeling Tools and Estimation of Energy Savings for Industrial Utilities

Abstract [en]

This master thesis describes the design of user-friendly tools on the software Engineering Equation Solver (EES) for energy audits of industrial sites, within the energy efficiency department of the company Schneider Electric, in Lyon (France). These tools aim at modeling the operation of utilities equipments in industry, and estimating the energy savings achievable for each of these utilities. The different utilities that were looked into for the design of these tools are industrial boilers, compressed air production units and industrial fans and pumps.As an introduction to the presentation of these tools, this thesis report first reviews a preliminary study that was carried out on previous energy audits of 7 supermarkets in France. This preliminary study leaded to the synthesis of these energy audits and the creation of a tool for a quick estimation of the energy saving potential of a supermarket during its walk-through audit. This preliminary task was very useful for a good practical understanding of Schneider Electric’s approach concerning energy audits of commercial and industrial sites, understanding that was necessary for the design of the tools for industrial utilities.The following chapters of this thesis then provide an overview of each of the tools designed on EES. For each tool, the first principles used for modeling the utility are explained. Then some energy saving actions available for each utility are described, and for each utility the design of the tool is explained. Finally some energy savings heuristics derived from these tools are estimated for each of the utility.
