Abstract [en]

A study has been made with respect to the profitability of converting a house from the millionprogramme

to passive housing standard. In order to assess profitability, cost of renovation, and savings

from reduced energy demand for heating was calculated. The expenses consists of the labor cost and the

cost of materials to provide passive housing standard. The reduction in energy usage produces a lower

energy cost. In order to assess the profitability a net present value analysis has been performed, which

examines what the total savings made through reduced energy costs, summed over a number of years, is

worth today. When the net present value of the total cost savings are the same as of the investment cost,

the investment is profitable. The study has shown that a conversion to passive housing is very expensive

but there is considerable annual savings to do.

Finally, the study states that it is possible to add additional insulation to a house and thereby saving

money. But renovating until the passive housing standard is achieved makes the investment less profitable

or even to a loss of business
