Implementation of a Decision Support Tool for LEED Certifications

International environmental certification systems such as LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design, USA) are currently growing fast on the French market, driven by the lack of visibility of the different French systems internationally. This Master thesis, carried out with the company Elioth in France, focuses exclusively on the LEED certification. Confronted with the limited knowledge of French building professionals about the LEED system, this thesis aimed at implementing a decision support tool to assist project managers at the early stage of a LEED project.
The V-model, a standard methodology, was used to carry out this Master thesis. A preliminary step consisted in defining the functional requirements of the tool. An architecture design was then created, before the tool was implemented with Excel and Visual Basic. Several testing procedures were performed and the tool was finally presented and validated.
The result of this Master thesis is a practical decision support tool named « LEED’elioth ». The tool enables the project manager to define objectives and orientate his LEED project by selecting the LEED credits to target. Different functions were implemented, for instance to create visual aids that can be presented to the client. Depending on the project LEED profile, the tool provides task lists that can be sent over to the different stakeholders involved in the project. This feature aims at being proactive in the certification management, which is essential in a LEED project. In parallel, a tool box is included to assist the project manager on specific LEED credit calculations, dealing mainly with energy and materials.
