Abstract [en]

The planning for public outdoor playgrounds for children is a controversial issue. They are often criticized for not being designed for children nor meeting the needs of children. The research chooses Bergshamra in Stockholm, Sweden as the study case and studies the status of public outdoor playgrounds. Then the thesis makes the new proposed design of playgrounds based on children’s and parents’ perspectives on the playgrounds.

The study reviews the literature on playground and summarizes the qualities, criticisms and influencing factors about the playgrounds. The research uses different methods including both interviews and questionnaire surveys with children and parents, as well as analyzing the records of children’s behavior. The results reveal that most of children and parents are satisfied with the playgrounds, however they also think the playgrounds should be updated to a more attractive state. Furthermore the research indicates that the playground management is not adequate and needs to be improved.

Based on children’s and parents’ perspectives, the thesis designs three new big playgrounds and develops them into adventure, contemporary and natural playground separately. Each playground is designed for all ages and has specific zones for different aged children. It creates highly participatory and fully functional public outdoor playgrounds for children.
