Shielding of transformer stray fields in trains

Abstract [en]

In construction of modern trains there are many requirements on the magneticstray fields from the train’s electrical components. These stray fields should not disturbneither other components in the train or components outside the train. Anotherimportant aspect is that the magnetic field exposure to the passengers shall be belowrequired levels.One component that creates stray field with high magnitudes is the maintransformer in the trains. In a recently manufactured Bombardier train, those fieldsreached unacceptable high values.In this Thesis a realistic 3D model of the transformer is created, in order toevaluate the effect that different shielding have on the stray fields. The first part isfocused on the transformer design, studying different materials that can be used for themagnetic core and the tank. In addition, the thickness of the tank is also studied.The second part evaluates the effect of different metallic shields on the leakageflux, in order to achieve a solution that reduces the stray field as much as possible usingthe least amount of shields.To build up the model and obtain the induction values, a FEM software has beenused.
